Development of Navigation system through API

By Katherine Lightwood

You've heard the story about Hansel and Gretal from Grimm's brother's fairy tales, right? Where their father left them in the forest at night and they left breadcrumbs along the way so that they can return to their way back home easily. So, my friends, today is not the medieval era anymore. There are various technologies which can help you to attain this awesomeness. And let's be fair 'breadcrumbs' is not a very good idea.

So, today I want to talk to you about modern breadcrumbs in the form of 'GPS crumbs' for your mobile phone. There are thousands of apps out there they track you when they are moving. And when you are moving across space. You can grab GPS crumbs - for example when you are driving or walking.

Now, let me make you understand that in layman's language. If you are traveling along a road, and you grab a whole lot of crumbs along the way chances are that they won't actually connect to the road you are traveling on. Like for example, if I grab 10 crumbs and I try to draw a line between them and it actually crosses through buildings and doesn't follow the road I am traveling on. And this is due to a few different reasons. Like taking too few samples along the way or inaccuracy in the GPS crumb collection.

But, with the road's API (which stands for 'application programming interface') provides a service where you can pass in your GPS crumbs and get GPS crumbs back that actually snaps to the road you've been traveling on and provide interpolation between them. So, you can create beautiful visualizations of GPS tracks of the road that you've been traveling on. Now, you can pass quite a few crumbs at a time. For example, if you pass in 100, and say, interpolate it for me, and generate the curves, you can get maybe 300 back. And this way you can plot an accurate visualization of the way you've been driving.

Let's say you are building an app to record your driving so you can compare with your friends. And the roads API gives you a perfect way to visualize this on your phone with complete accuracy using Google's map data. Roads API also provides metadata for enterprise customers.

For example, if you are building an asset tracker, you can get speed limits for roads you've traveled. So, if I am going from point A to B, I can visualize it by drawing different colors for the different speed limits whereI've gone. I can even give my users alert if they are speeding to make them safer drivers.

So, that was my thought of the day. To see more posts like this make sure to visit our main page. And do not forget to visit our institute's page to know more about graphic design, 3D, animation courses and other awesome stuff. Till then good day to you.
