THE PORTRAIT OF LIFE
By Rishab Verma
It was very difficult for me to enter into this field of art as I didn't have much knowledge about it. But I was very interested in transferring my imaginations to paper. Once in my class, I heard some students were discussing how YouTube is the best platform for learning anything for free and I was quite intrigued. I got home and started searching more about it and I came across a lot of art tutorial. I always wanted to draw someone's portrait but the result was never up to the mark. So, to brush up my skills I started watching more tutorials. I learned so much from so many artists, heard their stories and got inspired.
My first medium of art was "CHARCOAL". Well! let me tell you a little about "artist charcoal" because it is not the same as our regular activated charcoal. It is a form of dry art medium made up of finely ground organic materials that are held together by a gum or wax binder. Strokes of a charcoal pencil have great textures which leave a little less permanent marks than any other dry art media.
All artist have one thing in common, they use their blank paper to reveal their most inner thoughts.
On weekends, I always get out my home with my tiny sketching kit in search of an unknown face so that I can get some inspiration, I want my every sketch to tell a story.
As usual, I went out in search of a new face when I saw a little girl standing on a busy road. She was poor, covered in dirt, pacing into the footpath without being bothered by speeding cars and heavy
traffic. She was about 7 years old and the reason she caught my attention was her beautiful innocent face and lovely eyes as if those eyes were telling a story that I was looking for.
It looked like that girl was the eldest child on her family because all her siblings looked much younger than her. On that heavy traffic, she was stopping cars and dusted them while asking for money. The scene was heart ranching. Her eyes were telling chronicles of her every pain an suffering. I kept watching her until I realised she could be the heroine of my next art project so that I could portray her anguish as vividly as I could.
On my way home all I could think was that child's face, her vacant eyes, and priceless smile. And it all got me thinking that anyone could be happy no matter how poor or rich they are. Happiness lies in small things, true happiness doesn't rely on materialistic prospects. No one's life is perfect, how we have to manage our life and be optimistic it's all up to us.
After I reached home, I got back into my work. Gathered my charcoal pencils and started drawing her as accurately as I could. I started to draw quickly, as I feared I might lose my memory of her hauntingly beautiful expression. I was quite satisfied with the outcomes that I've created. It was 2 am, I open my sketch pad where I drew that little girl's face. And while watching that I smiled and got sad the same moment, I keep on wondering that there could be so many dreams in their eyes that might never get cherished.
This artwork had answered some of the unanswered questions that I always asked my self. From that day that girl became my inspiration. She taught me that even if you don't have may luxuries in your life you still can be happy and grateful for what you've got. Because life itself is a gift, it's up to us that how we bend it in our way.
So, my friends that were my story behind this artwork. Hope you all liked it. Now it's time for me to sign up.
