How your heart behaves in Love
By Katherine Lightwood
You probably know that the way you feel can affect your heart rate. If you are feeling calm your heart rate is nice and slow, chances are you don’t even feel it. But when faced with fear or something really exciting you might feel your heart pounding away in your chest.
But your heart rate doesn’t just respond to what you are feeling it can in some ways control how you feel by changing the way you process incoming information.
Cardiovascular arousal or the state where your heart is pumping faster or harder than normal can actually intensify your feeling of fear and anxiety and this happens because every heartbeat, the strength, and the timing is signaled to the brain through blood vessels called baroreceptors. When the heart rate and the blood pressure increase, the baroreceptors tell this to the brain and the thought that the brain can interpret the signal as fear.
So, when you see or talk to someone you ‘like’, I mean really like then a hormone called noradrenaline causes you to sweat more and your heart to beat faster. And which will lead to flushed cheek and dilated pupils and so on.
Therefore, if you think that you are playing it cool, then my friend, you are so wrong. Your whole body is screaming loudly that you like that person.
These days I am having a very good opportunity of seeing such scenarios. Some of my fellow classmates are proving the science right. So, it’s giving me a good amount of practical scientific knowledge and a great deal of happiness.
Yeah I know I am weird for using my classmates as test subjects. But everything is fair in love, war, and science. Just kidding, I am not doing anything like that.
We like to think of ourselves as higher animals with brain driving the body. Completely rational and independent of our ancient programming but evidence show our biology is affecting our perception of time, our decision making and how we look at the world around us.
After all, we are just big dumb animals.
