Brown Dwarfs: One of the mysterious objects in Space

By Katherine Lightwood

It was back in 1995, a year after I was born, astronomers held a conference called "Cool Stars 9" in Florance, Italy, where a huge announcement was made. The first gas giant exoplanet, that is the first planet like Jupiter outside of our solar system has been discovered. And that was crazy exciting news to think of planets outside of the eight planets that we are so familiar with.

But unfortunately, it probably overshadowed another announcement about a much more mysterious type of object "The Moon"...Just Kidding... That would be the most boring thing...!!

Ok...let's be serious. Today I am in a bit funny mood, I don't know why. Ok people back to the work. Astronomers found the first incontrovertible brown dwarf. So, brown dwarfs, are they stars like red dwarfs? Nope, they are a really confusing object.

Brown dwarfs are celestial bodies that are in between stars like the sun and giants planets like Jupiter. So, it's way harder to characterize which makes them more fun. It's like BMW X6 which is halfway between Sedan and SUV. And that's how I quickly get off topic...They are intermediate in terms of their properties, how their atmosphere looks and most importantly in terms of their mass. But we can generalize and say that all brown dwarfs are about the size of Jupiter. However, they have about 8% mass of the sun, therefore that makes them way denser.

Despite being so much more than planets, brown dwarfs are still not dense enough to have the key trait that defines a star. They can't fuse hydrogen in their core. and that's really important. In fact, brown dwarfs were originally theorized as the object that couldn't fuse hydrogen in their core. They were originally called 'Black Dwarfs'.

But even back then they were referred to as stars. The real difficulty is understanding where the difference between a star and a brown dwarf. And your gonna discover that it's really hard to draw the line between a planet, a brown dwarf, and a star, which is weird because that's like the number one things that humans like to do. "Categorize Things". So, because brown dwarfs don't do a lot of fusion or any hydrogen fusion so they don't shine like stars. So, they are faint, small and cold...just like me. So, we couldn't find them.

So, that was my thought of the day. To see more posts like this make sure to visit our main page. And Do not forget to visit our institute's page to know more about graphic design, 3D, animation courses and other awesome stuff. Till then good day to you.
