Is Loneliness Dangerous

By Katherine Lightwood

Today I want to talk about loneliness which you should n't be confused with introversion or social anxiety. Loneliness has actually been defined in many ways like ...state of solitude or being alone...

Of course, we are not the only generation who feel loneliness, recently a study was published in which it showed that 18-22 years olds have the highest loneliness score followed by millennials. The study also suggested that the lack of IRL(in real life) social life may be a part of the problem. Levels of in-person interaction, physical and mental wellness, and work-life balance are better predictors of loneliness than social media alone.

One study that I've read which breaks down loneliness into three types.

First one is situational loneliness is when unpleasant events or circumstances cause us to retract from society. Second is developmental loneliness can hinder our capacity to balance individualism and intimacy. Psychological disorders like depression or schizophrenia could cause developmental loneliness. And thirdly internal loneliness which is a self-perception of worthlessness intensifies the feeling of being alone.

Lifestyle influences our neurophysiology. So, lonely people perceive the world very differently. For instance, people suffering from loneliness tend to see benign events as more threatening, living in a self- defense mode even in their sleep. Some research suggested that lonelier people have a restless sleep pattern which could impact cognitive development.

A 2009 study showed that lonelier people showed less activation in brain centers are associated with rewards when viewing pictures of people in the pleasant situation an less activation in the parts of the brain linked to empathy when viewing images of people in the unpleasant situation.

Loneliness is a social epidemic- yes but there are remedies. But my friends do not associate loneliness by enjoying some alone time. Extroverts and introverts have a very different definition for loneliness itself.

So, that was my thought of the day. To see more posts like this make sure to visit our main page. And Do not forget to visit our institute's page to know more about graphic design, 3D, animation courses and other awesome stuff. Till then good day to you.
