The sentiment is a Chemical defect found on the winning side By Katherine Lightwood

The sentiment is a Chemical defect found on the winning side By Katherine Lightwood “Sentiment is a chemical defect found in the losing side.”   This was a dialogue of  Sherlock Holmes from my favorite television series Sherlock BBC . And most often I think about this topic, is showing sentiment or emotion is actually a weakness? I often don’t get this concept; it gets really hard for me to wrap my mind around this idea. Since my childhood, I’ve always been taught that showing emotions is a shame. So, I was trained in that way and now it became my 'default setting' . I grew up as not only an introvert but also a painfully shy person.  But I’ve always been very observant about the behaviors of others and compared it with mine. And unfortunately, I’ve found a very big gap.  People usually do show emotions and most of them don’t regret much about it. And here comes the concept of emotional intelligence. It refers to how well we handle our...

Hopefully, soon it will rain By Katherine Lightwood

Hopefully, soon it will rain By Katherine Lightwood This world was chaotic forest, wild and dark, When I was caged on a crystal ball filled with the spark. Followed all their rules, abide all their supreme commands.  Sought forgiveness for the thought of a sin, and just made amends. They promised me that I will rise above the oceans and skies. But, alas!! I fall on the bed of thorns, realized they just fed me lies.  I played the game called life when they preached me those false prophecies, Marked with the curse of failure, they called me the queen of atrocities. I broke them and they broke me, like a foretold hostility. Thus I became make of their imperfection, their shameful posterity.  But now, I found a mask, dark and perfect like a dream. So, I hide from the world, to save myself from this torturous scream. Now, they still fight me, try to break my soul and lure me to the dark, But I am another name for monstrosity now, once I was their cr...

What if AI gets into it's full Potential By Katherine Lightwood

What if AI gets into it's full Potential By Katherine Lightwood Machine learning, neural networks and deep learning all are buzzwords in AI circles. But essentially they are all referring to attempt to teach a computer to recognize a dog in a photo or spell a word. And to do that engineered present a computer with lots of data and teach it by repetitions. Similar to teaching an animal a trick, encouraging it when it does well and discouraging it's wrong.  Eventually, the AI will get better in facial recognition or predictive text or whatever task you are giving it to do. But the thing is even if it can do a very simple task like spotting a dog, the computer has to do the calculation every time. It has to scan every pixel in the image and check everything. It just can't anticipate what you want, they just don't work that way.  Now, the question of the day, Do we want the machine to be able to learn to anticipate actions? To be able to get s...

Collision Of Galaxies isn't that scary By Katherine Lightwood

Collision Of Galaxies isn't that scary By Katherine Lightwood Staring at the night sky gives me so much thought. Last night I took a break after I overworked and felt a bit dizzy. While watching the night sky I thought what would happen if the two galaxies collide. It might be odd to get your head around, but galaxies can and do collide. But far from a wild party of death, galaxies collision yield hotbeds for new star formation. Leading astronomers suggests that this not so violent event is actually a driving force behind the galactic evolution. The big question here is that how can galaxies collide and just not destroy everything? To know that let’s focus on what galaxies exactly is. Every galaxy is made up of 100 billion stars with planets orbiting their host stars, but those stars are really far apart. Take Milky Way for example. We are at the edge of the spiral arm called Orion Spur . It looks crowded in our little neighborhood, but our nearest neighbor Alp...

My Untitled Guilt By Katherine Lightwood

My Untitled  Guilt By Katherine Lightwood Bridges are falling down as I am standing on the edge, Burnt down those rusty chains as I thought about that pledge. I took that pledge a while ago, drenched on the puddle of shame, Wrapped in the layers of nightmares, tired of those old games. I played till I died, I played till I sold my broken dreams, The void I've become, oh Wanderer, I've crushed my own self-esteem. So much, wanted to fade in the nothingness called sorrow, But the demons of attention hit me like a poisonous arrow. Now, I am standing here at the edge of the dark forest, Carrying a firebrand with flickering flame, in the rain of August. The warmth of firebrand is keeping me alive, The brilliance of its glow is helping me to thrive. But how long, how long will I be able to save this light, I am afraid that it will burn out or vanish like a mirage from my sight. Hopeless I feel, thoughtless I've become, Don't know which way I am goin...

My Love for 'Jane Eyre' By Katherine Lightwood

My Love for 'Jane Eyre' By Katherine Lightwood “I have a strange feeling with regard to you. As if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly knotted to a similar string in you. And if you were to leave I'm afraid that cord of communion would snap. And I have a notion that I'd take to bleeding inwardly. As for you, you'd forget me.” - Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte This line from the book ‘Jane Eyre’ has struck a chord in my heart in such a way that I can’t ever put this in words. And that’s the reason I’ve been in hopelessly love with Charlotte Bronte’s work. She simply speaks my language, I mean not literally but metaphorically I would rather say. I started reading Jane Eyre at the end of last year only. And I found that I can relate to her in so many ways. And if she was a real person then she would be my best friend. What a fascinating character she is. Intense, passionate, kind hearted and a dark soul of course. And if you ask me w...

Head Transplant-The Ultimate Scare By Katherine Lightwood

Head Transplant-The Ultimate Scare By Katherine Lightwood As I've studied Immunology and transplant biochemistry in a relatively detailed way, I sometimes wonder about Transplants and how people are opting for this options. How they handle transplant rejection and how they manage their life with immunosuppressive drugs. And my core interest lies in the ultimate " Head Transplant " topic.  So whole head transplant? How possible it is? Unlike other organs, your brain and spinal cord are extremely sensitive to damage and resistant to repair. This is why the injury to neck and spine often results in permanent. And complete reattachment of heads from this body has remained the stuff of science fiction and fantasy. But that's not to say that scientist aren't working diligently to develop techniques to aid in spinal cord repair. The current approach includes stem cell therapies that encourage the growth of new neurons and biological glues that work like ...
